Dr. Bjorn Karlsson
Director General
Iceland Construction Authority, Iceland

Dr. Björn Karlsson is a well-known fire safety engineer and scientist who is currently the Director General of the Iceland Construction Authority and also holds joint appointment as an Associate Professor in the Environmental and Civil Engineering Department at the University of Iceland. Dr Karlsson is a recipient of prestigious "The Philip H. Thomas Medal of Honour", awarded by the University of Edinburgh for his work on fire research for the Fire Service in 2009. He served as a Fire Marshal and General Director of the state run Iceland Fire Authority, Reykjavik, Iceland from 2001-2011 before elevation to Director General of Iceland Construction Authority. Dr. Karlsson received his Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering (Hons) from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh in 1986 and PhD degree in Civil Engineering from Lund University in 1992 where he also served as an Associate Professor from 1993 to 2001.
Dr. Karlsson had authored several books and articles in the fields of Fire Safety and the textbook "Enclosure Fire Dynamics" ( coauthored by Professor James Quintiere) is one of his best known works. He sits on the board of the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS), is the Chairman of the IAFSS Education subcommittee, and is on the editorial boards of “Fire Technology” and “International Journal on Engineering Performance-Based Fire Codes”.

     

Mr. Pratap Karguppikar
Chief Fire Officer (Retired)
Mumbai Fire Brigade

Mr. Pratap Karguppikar is a retired Chief Fire Officer of the Mumbai Fire Brigade - the first responders to fires at the Taj Mahal Hotel, Hotel Trident, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Leopold Cafe and Bade Miyan Gali, during the Nov. 26, 2008 terrorist attacks. Sri Karguppikar is a regular Faculty imparting services in Fire Prevention and Fire Safety at National Fire Service College, Nagpur, & Fire and Emergency Services in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Delhi. He was a member of Expert Committee appointed by Government of India to prepare security control rule for public buildings against manmade disasters, in the aftermath of terrorist attacks in Mumbai. Sri Karguppikar possess exemplary attainments for his selfless service in fire fighting and rescue operations during several ghastly incidents of house collapse, accidental fires of uncontrollable magnitude, riots and bomb blasts in December 1992 and November 2008. He was adorned with the Prestigious President Service Medal for Gallantry for rescuing more than 500 people during 26/11 terrorist blitz on Mumbai. He is a Certified trainer for Nuclear, Biological, Chemical rescue and disaster preparedness & He served Fire and Security Association of India in advisory capacity.

     

Prof. Chinmay Ghoroi
Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar

Dr. Chinmay Ghoroi is an Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar. He is the Co-Coordinator of Safety Centre at IIT Gandhinagar which is one of its kinds in India and was instrumental in its genesis. He organized International conference on Safety (2012), International workshop on Process Safety (2012), Workshop on Fire Safety (2013) and Symposium on Process Safety (2013) at IIT Gandhinagar. He teaches UG and PG courses in Fire and Process Safety along with other Chemical Engineering courses.
Dr. Ghoroi pursued his Bachelor degree in Chemistry (Hons) (1995) and Chemical Engineering (1998) from Calcutta University. He completed his Masters in Chemical Engineering (2000) from Jadavpur University and PhD in Chemical Engineering (2007) from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He received R.G.Manudhane Excellence Award for best PhD thesis (2008) from Chemical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Employee Excellence Award (SIM4ME Thermodynamics Pride Award) from Invensys Process System (2008). He was Visiting Scholar at Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center, Texas A&M during May – July, 2013 and New Jersey Center for Engineered Particulates, New Jersey Institute of Technology during January – December, 2010. He served in Chemical Process Industry and Simulation Industry as a Process Engineer and Senior Software Development Engineer in Oswal group and SimSci-Esscor (Invensys Process System) respectively.
