The International Conference on Safety is part of a larger Safety Center initiative at IIT Gandhinagar to research and find solutions to major safety problems in the country.

Nearly 360,000 people were killed and another 504,000 were injured throughout India in 2010, according to National Crime Records Bureau data. Given the wide discrepancy in the reporting and recording of accident data, the actual number is substantially higher. For instance, official data recorded 8.639 deaths from snake bites in 2010. However, a study published in the PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases based on an examination of 123,000 deaths from 6,671 randomly selected areas estimated the number of annual snakebite deaths in India at 45,900.

The International Conference on Safety at IITGN will undertake a comprehensive examination of the range of safety issues in India and explore solutions. The conference will consider all aspects of safety, such as design, operations, regulations, planning, standards, testing, behavioral safety, occupational safety, environment, etc. - across different sectors, such as Fire, Transportation, Consumer, Industrial, Informal Sector, Buildings & structures, etc.

The interdisciplinary conference will bring together researchers, educators, safety officials, engineers, safety advocates, activists, policy makers and consultants to explore solutions to pressing safety challenges in India from a global perspective. The International Conference on Safety is being conducted in conjunction with the Amalthea 2012: The Annual Technical Summit of IITGN.
